Biomedical jobs with UK visa sponsorship

Verified biomedical scientist, research, and lab roles at licensed sponsors across the UK.

Exceptional talent? The Global Talent Visa lets you skip sponsorship entirely.

UK biomedical hiring splits three ways: NHS pathology and clinical labs, university research, and commercial biotech and drug discovery. Every role listed here is at an employer holding a valid Home Office sponsor licence, checked against the current gov.uk register.

For NHS Trust biomedical scientist roles (SOC code 2113) the Health & Care Worker visa is usually the better route than Skilled Worker - lower application fees, no Immigration Health Surcharge, and faster processing when the sponsor is an approved health and care employer. University-led research assistant, research fellow, and postdoctoral posts typically use Skilled Worker or Global Talent (for candidates with peer-reviewed publications and endorsement from a UK research body). Commercial biotech at firms like Isomorphic Labs, Healx and Nucleome operates through Skilled Worker.

Sponsorship for biomedical roles

Which UK employers sponsor biomedical scientists?
NHS Trusts are the largest single group - Plymouth, Cardiff, Newcastle, Cambridge University Hospitals, Manchester Foundation Trust, Buckinghamshire, and dozens more all hold Skilled Worker licences and hire internationally for biomedical scientist grades. On the research side: University of Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, Imperial, Manchester, Edinburgh, KCL, Glasgow, and specialist institutes like the John Innes Centre and Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Commercial biotech includes Isomorphic Labs, Healx, Nucleome Therapeutics, and Faculty.
What's the difference between the Skilled Worker and Health & Care Worker visas for lab roles?
Both grant leave to work for a specific sponsor. Health & Care Worker is available only to eligible healthcare occupations (biomedical scientist SOC 2113, laboratory technician SOC 3111, healthcare science practitioner, clinical scientist, etc.) working for an approved UK health and care sector employer (NHS, NHS suppliers, adult social care providers). Its application fee is £628 for stays up to 3 years versus £943 for the same length on Skilled Worker (inside-UK applications), and Health & Care Worker applicants are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year on Skilled Worker). Its salary threshold is also lower - £25,000 versus £41,700 general on Skilled Worker. If the role and employer are both eligible, Health & Care Worker is almost always the better route.
What salary do I need to qualify for sponsorship?
For Health & Care Worker (typical NHS biomedical scientist), the minimum is £25,000 or the "going rate" for your occupation code, whichever is higher. For Skilled Worker general, the minimum is £41,700 (or the going rate). Research and academic posts at universities need the same £41,700 unless they qualify for reduced-rate options (new-entrant discount, PhD-relevant discount, or the immigration salary list).
Can I switch from a Student visa to a sponsored research role after my PhD?
If you complete a PhD in the UK on a Student visa, you can apply for a Graduate visa (2 or 3 years, unsponsored) or switch directly to Skilled Worker if a sponsoring employer offers you a Certificate of Sponsorship. Most research assistant and research fellow roles at UK universities qualify. See the switching-employer guide for the mechanics.
How often is this list updated?
Daily. The scraper pulls fresh listings from NHS Jobs, jobs.ac.uk, and biotech applicant tracking systems each morning, then cross-references every employer against the current gov.uk sponsor register. Any role at an employer that has since lost its licence is dropped automatically.
